BOOK
SUPERHEROES BY DULCE PINZÓN $35.00
DESCRIPTION

The Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights (CHIRLA) emerged in Los Angeles in 1986, in the wake of the Immigration Reform and Control Act—a law that legalized some while marginalizing many. CHIRLA’s philosophy is simple yet radical: immigrants are not beneficiaries of change but the very force that drives it. Across neighborhoods, schools, and workplaces, CHIRLA equips individuals with the tools to protect themselves and uplift their communities.

With the release of this book, Madre Mezcal seeks to bring greater visibility to CHIRLA’s ongoing work. 100% of proceeds from sales will be directed to support CHIRLA’s advocacy, education, and legal efforts—helping sustain the infrastructure that protects immigrant families and their futures.

Visual artist, curator, manager, cultural entrepreneur, activist and mother Dulce Pinzón intertwines all these roles in her practice. This project consists of 20 color photographs of Mexican and Latino immigrants dressed in the costumes of popular American and Mexican superheroes. The principal objective of this series is to pay homage to these brave and determined men and women who, without the aid of any supernatural power, manage to withstand extreme labor conditions in order to help their families and communities survive and prosper.
