Madre offers artisanal agave spirits, made by five families located in the rolling hills of the Oaxacan Sierra and the highest peaks of Los Altos, Jalisco.
Watching over the land for centuries,  these families started distilling agave spirits for the intent of personal guidance and celebration. They would like to share that spirit with respect and gratitude.

STORY
It’s said that some of the best mezcal in Oaxaca can be found in reused plastic bottles bought from palenques on otherwise empty dirt roads. These are the dirt roads Madre’s founders set down when they met Jose, Madre’s original and current mezcal producer.
image
True to tradition, plastic bottles of what would become Madre Ensamble were brought over the border, making their way to bartenders in Brooklyn, who found creative uses for this mezcal that was sweet and complex.

image
In the past years, Madre has graduated from plastic bottles to hand-poured glass, from the bartender’s secret stash to the top of the cocktail menu, and from a handful of bottles tucked in luggage into a product shared by friends across America and parts of Europe, Asia and Australia.

Using processes passed as family secrets through generations, our mezcal is truly handmade. With commitment to heritage and quality, many families expand very slowly, if at all. As Madre grows, each supplier has grown with us. Producing only as much as they feel comfortable. Each family supplies a unique mezcal that goes into the different Madre expressions.

Inspired by the generational knowledge of these families, and their ability to infuse their mezcal with the essence of the Oaxacan land, Madre sought out a partner in the state of Jalisco, who could produce a tequila with the same respect to the land.

In the generations that have passed since all tequila was known simply as ‘Vino de Mezcal de Tequila’, there are only a few families left who maintain the old ways, producing a truly pure tequila that captures the essences of the land, and allows the natural flavors of the agave to present themselves.
image
On a mountain top, far away from the large distilleries that produce tequila for the whole world, we met a family who shares our values and the values of our mezcaleros in Oaxaca, and who would become the newest member of the Madre Familia.

LA FAMILIA
José Inés García Morales and family have been making mezcal in San Dionisio Ocotepec for generations and were Madre's original partners. Together we have grown. José, his brother Cesar, and their family continue to provide Madre with Espadin and Cuishe as well as small batch offerings.
image
Carlos Mendez Blas and his family, based in Santiago, Matatlán, started making mezcal in 1930 and remain a family-owned business to this day. Carlos and his team produce Espadin for Madre, and oversee all our bottling requirements.

Based in Palmar, Miahuatlán, Natalio Vasquez was a handsome cowboy with a sharp mustache. He also made incredible mezcal before he lost his life for community organizing. His widow, Isabel Martínez Rios, and family continue to make mezcal despite their loss, and they continue to be part of the Madre family, producing Cuishe.

Based in Santa Catarina Minas, third-generation mezcalero Moisés Martínez Alvarez stays true to the traditions of this region known for commitment to the old ways. Producing Madre Ancestral from his own blend of Tobasiche and Espadín maguey, Moises and his family honor the origins of mezcal using only hand-crushed agaves and distilling in clay pots.

Located in San Julian, Jalisco, at an elevation of 7,500 feet, the estate of Don Carlos Padilla is blessed with the natural conditions to produce flavorful, complex tequila. Nurturing these gifts from the land, the Padilla family produces additive free-tequila reminiscent of when all tequila was mezcal.
