DREAM WORLDS: THE WORK OF DIANA GARCIA
Madre asked Diana a few questions about her work and the spiritual connection she has with it. Her answers were, of course, beautiful, spiritual, and healing.

The artwork of Diana Garcia is a true representation of the artist: beautiful, spiritual, and healing. The Mexico City based artist, works with many mediums, including large scale murals and sculpture, but regardless of the output, her work maintains a level of surrealist spiritualism. The work is intentional and intended to facilitate feelings and action. Garcia’s personal journey is woven into her work, casting a spotlight on the artist’s continued work to explore deeper parts of herself and the world.

WHAT IS YOUR NAME AND WHERE DO YOU COME FROM?
Diana Garcia from Monterrey, Nuevo León, México.
WHAT ROLE DOES ART PLAY IN YOUR LIFE?

Art is how and what we all express, it can be everything. How we move, feel, walk, talk, dress, dance, play, create… It is a lifestyle, an every second choice of beauty.

I grew up playing at my grandma´s art studio, she is a painter and does sculptures as well. I learned different materials and concept at a very early age. I was lucky to have this universe accessible to practice with my hands and create from my feelings and imagination.

It’s also a healing and spiritual experience. An opportunity to recreate and destroy, reinvent and balance myself and the world around me.

DOES YOUR WORK HAVE TO DO WITH SPIRITUALITY?

What I’ve learned from spiritual people is that we are a mix of body, mind, spirit and emotions, so everything we do should have a quarter of spirituality to be balanced within ourselves. My work is inspired by the Rainbow Warriors prophecy:

"There will come a day when people of all races, colors, and creeds will put aside their differences. They will come together in love, joining hands in unification, to heal the Earth and all Her children. They will move over the Earth like a great Whirling Rainbow, bringing peace, understanding and healing everywhere they go. Many creatures thought to be extinct or mythical will resurface at this time; the great trees that perished will return almost overnight. All living things will flourish, drawing sustenance from the breast of our Mother, the Earth."

BE WHAT YOU DREAM is my life philosophy, a vision of a responsible world through the personal choice of transformation, flowing with our purpose, generating a positive collective impact.

CAN YOU EXPLAIN THE WILD ANIMAL CREATURES YOU CREATE?
For several years I’ve shared this message through the Guardians, animal amalgams that represent the fusion of all of our talents and expression of authenticity when we take away our fear of being. These Guardians are a reflection of ourselves and our allies to achieve our dreams. My mission is to inspire love, respect, and connection between all living beings.
WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN DOING WHILE STAYING AT HOME?

Life is a ceremony, and this quarantine has surely deepened the introspection. The week before this started, I was at one of my spiritual gatherings, so it kind of set the tone for this time. At the beginning I got a clear message, I had to do a ceremonial fast to go deeper, receive messages and align myself for the times to come. I decided to invite a few friends to the first one, and got an incredible response, many people joined. I felt the call to built a website, now I’m guiding ceremonial 4 days / 4 nights fasts with a ritual for each day every New and Full Moon from now on.

I’ve also been going deep in the dream world, tracing dreams with reality, writing and creating art, meditating every day, cooking, taking baths, exercising, playing and cuddling hard with Churru, my ferret, facetiming with friends and family, gathering with a few friends now and then, going outdoors to nature every 2 weeks. The more time goes by, the less news and conspiracy videos I watch. I try to help with what I can, donating, supporting others, making plans to restructure community.

WHAT INSIGHT HAVE YOU GAINED DURING THIS TIME?

The world is really unfair, but it is balanced, and there’s the same amount of light and darkness. We have free will and we can choose which side we want to be in. A portal to the unknown has opened widely, and we can recreate the world we aim to live in if we are brave to stand up for our collective rights and dreams. Being in fear only brings our energy down. There’s so much internal work to do. This is a great opportunity to shift the global situation by choosing differently, each one of us adds to the collective. We are the hope for a better world. We must heal, open our hearts, and be more loving to Earth and each other.

I too recognize it’s not that easy for all, not everyone has their rights respected, have savings, many have lost their jobs, are sick or have difficult situations at home. That’s why we gotta unite and help whomever we can. It’s very important we elevate prayer to create a different communion between all living beings.

YOU’VE CREATED A PLAYLIST FOR MADRE. HOW DOES MUSIC INTERACT WITH YOUR LIFE?

I gotta say I’ve been enjoying silence. The city is so quiet, I find it really special. But half of the time I’m listening to ambient music, love playing Nature sounds, a bit of instrumental and classical while writing. Ceremonial music for when in rituals. But then, weekends are for dancing! So I have my solo dance nights with cumbias and reggaeton, 80s, hiphop, electronic music… This playlist I created is pure reggaeton. I think the girls will appreciate it. I find it therapeutic to dance to this kind of music when in quarantine, it releases a lot of stress we carry in our hips.

IF YOU COULD SHARE A GLASS OF MEZCAL WITH ANYBODY, LIVING OR DEAD, WHO WOULD IT BE AND WHY?

This might sound pretentious but fuuuuck, if it could only be true… I’d like to be at a house party, on a bit of psychedelics, drinking mezcal with my friends and Frida, Egon Shiele, Tim Burton, Godard, Che Guevara, Tchaikovsky, Frank Gehry, Quentin Tarantino, Selena, Andy Warhol, Aretha Frankin, Brigitte Bardot, Dali, Kurt Cobain, Remedios Varo, John Lennon, Yoko, Dylan, Bowie, Michael Reynolds, Paolo Soleri, Leonora Carrington, Edward Gorey, Jimmy Hendrix, Elvis, Woody Allen, Ai Weiwei, Ingmar Bergman, Prince,Jimmy Page, Basquiat, Chaplin, David Lynch, Terrence Malick, Herzog, Forrest Gump, Liza Minelli, Luis Barragan, Moctezuma, La Malinche, Beethoven, Nietzsche, Daft Punk, Alex and Allison Grey, Jacobo Grinberg, Melies, Edison, Marina Abramovic, Olivia Newton, Mick Jagger, Neil Armstrong, Residente, Maria Sabina, Tony Farfalla, and a Marakame.

Why? Because, I mean…
